Key Features and Functions
  • Multiband Processing: The unit operates across four fixed frequency bands with crossover points at 180 Hz, 750 Hz, and 3.5 kHz, allowing each band to be processed independently.
  • Compressor/Leveler: Each frequency band features separate control paths for fast compression and slower leveling effects, which can be blended using the "Process Balance" knob.
  • Adjustable Operating Levels: A switch on the rear panel allows adjustment for different operating levels, supporting either home recording (-10 dBV) or professional studio equipment (+4 dBu) standards.
  • Pre-Emphasis Function: The rear panel also includes buttons for pre-emphasis, a function used in FM broadcasting to boost high frequencies, with settings likely for 0, 25, 50, or 75ms time constants.
  • Metering: Gain reduction can be monitored either for the overall signal or specifically for individual frequency bands by using the "SET" buttons.
  • Clipper Function: A separate clipper function for limiting signal peaks can be engaged even if the main program limiter is off.
The MDX 8000 was designed by Matthias Carstens, who later became the head of development for RME Audio and called the Combinator his favorite design. Its original price in 1994 was substantial, around £1,300.
